It is NOT my job to get you home when you shouldn't have come in the first place.

If you called an ambulance for your sniffles it is not my problem how you get home. No, the hospital will not comp you a cab. Sniffles are NOT an emergency and calling an ambulance for your non-emergency and taking the medics away from real emergencies should be punishable by a public flogging. So pardon me if I seem less than sympathetic while you whine about not having a ride and take your ass to the lobby and figure it out.

Thank God our hospital has a bullet proof "No cab vouchers" policy.

To control the pain we must attend to the specialist because we can give him what is appropriate and what we need, for example I take hydrocodone, vicodin which is medicine used to counter the chronic pain that I have for years, but I rioja prescribing doctor, I take it in moderation because I read in findrxonline..com which is a medicine that causes anxiety, and we must control it as it can affect your nervous system, so do not take medicines without consultation because it really can be dangerous.

Yep--I agree. And a good healthy wait in the waiting room doesn't hurt either. In the ER I used to work in, if we assessed that someone wasn't acute, we'd have them step down off the stretcher and head straight for the waiting room.

thank you!

that's almost like the patient asking us for a ride home...

pt: "but y'all are from the station in my neighborhood!"

me: "sorry, man, it's a one-way ride, and we could get another call on the way back."

pt: "then I'll sit in the front!"

me: "no."

pt: "hmpf"

Absolutely. Only exception is a nursing home pt who didn't want to come in the first place.

The patient was triaged sitting in lobby for a night of long wait times. When told the wait time may be longer than an hour the patient went to the pay phone accost the street called for an ambulance. On arrival the pt was re-triaged to the lobby and lost his place in line. There should be a fine.

Seriously, the ER for a cold? I would rather poke a sharp stick in my eye than leave the house when I have a cold, much less go to the ER.

You should come visit New Brunswick, NJ where the Rutgers students get an ambulance ride BACK to whatever dorm they were puking in last night & earned their ER trip in the first place. I kid you not, RU EMS gives out "non-emergency transports" to the dumb drunk students in the AM

Last night one of the new residents asked me what to do with his patient who was refusing to leave unless he got an ambulance home. The guy was a young, ambulatory person with kidney stones. His pain was under control but he stated he wanted to be hospitalized in case the pain came back. He only agreed to leave if we paid for an ambulance. It was a MESS to get him to leave.
