Here in Holland you aren't ALLOWED to go to the hospital without permission from your family dr or nightcare unless you are dying.
I had to get a referral to get my pap smear from a gynecologist even! All because those drs are in the hospital!
When I had a miscarriage, the dr said to get over it and didn't even examine me (obviously not our current dr!!!) and I had to BEG to be seen at the hospital!
If you BREAK your leg at any time in the day you cannot go to hospital! You go to reg dr or nightcare and get a referral.
If you want to give birth in a hospital, you have to pay for it and you can only come at 6cm dilated (midwife comes to your home before) and you leave within hours of giving birth unless there's a reason to stay... most people give birth at home here without problems. I got lucky.. my son's birth was a bloody induction mess at the hospital and I lost 1 liter of blood so I get free admission to give birth there with this 2nd baby.
America needs to take a page from the healthcare books of other countries!!!!
That's very sad -- I dropped a heavy thing on my big toe and it's all kinds of bruised and funny looking, but see a doctor? What would they do beyond say "sucks to be you, take some aspirin".
I wish I could say, I don't believe you, but sadly I know you are telling the truth. I agree with anonymous above, "sucks to be you and take some aspirin."
I SMASHED two toes a month ago and as a former ER nurse thought better than to go to hospital. Two weeks later my second toe was red, hot and nasty. Turns out it was shattered through the joint and I had bone-shards migrating under the skin. It required open surgery with a K-wire fixation. Still, there was no way I was showing up in MY ER with a "stubbed toe".
Thanks very much for visiting, I hope you will enjoy yourself. ER nurses have the privilege of being on the front lines, nowhere else in the hospital are things so chaotic and out of control on a regular basis. This either breeds or attracts a certain kind of person, you will find they have a terrific sense of teamwork as well as well developed senses of humor.
Stories here are composites of experiences I have had in many years of practice. Any resemblance to people living or dead are purely coincidental. If you think this is you, it is not. Events portrayed as recent are not. Stories are products of past experiences and a vivid storytelling bent.
These are my own opinions, no one elses. As people that know me can attest, I have a lot of opinions!
If you take my writing as medical advice then you are an idiot.

Hats off to ya. When will the medal ceremony be?
At least you didn't have to amputate.
That was close.

Jeez.
Oh my gosh! What did he expect you to do for him?
Is this save due to a new cerebral cryotherapy, a different chest compression ration, some new drug, . . . ?
Think of the contribution you can make to science.
What was your secret?
How did you save this life?
Did it involve Lyrica?

No offense, Laura K., but based on the four examples you cited, there's no fucking way I'd want a system like that.
Somewhere between your case(s) and Nurse K's described patient seems more reasonable.
I farted and it smelled a little funny, I think I may have a GI bleed.Clear the waiting room here I come...
